On the eve of the National Conference on Education in San Diego, CA, AASA, The School Superintendents Association played host to a unique kind of speed dating event on February 14th, but instead of roses and chocolates, the sparks flew between educators and the latest innovations in Generative AI (GenAI). Kovexa’s GenConnect Session – Speed Dating Edition brought together superintendents, educators, and over a dozen Gen AI companies for an afternoon of exploration, connection, and possibility.

Gone are the days of dry AI presentations and articles. This pre-conference workshop was designed to be an immersive experience, a chance for education leaders to meet and engage directly with the minds shaping the future of education through Gen AI. From established Edtech companies to inspiring startups, the room buzzed with the energy of innovators, superintendents, and those eager to learn.

But it wasn’t just about the big names. The session ensured a diverse spread of Gen AI solutions across various domains, from school safety and voice activations to literacy, math, and social studies. This breadth of offerings highlighted the potential of Gen AI to impact every aspect of the education experience.

The session wasn’t just about showcasing products; it was about fostering informed and responsible use of Gen AI in our schools. The pitches were scored based on some of the most important topics for K-12: Data security, privacy, authenticity, and professional development.

And for those seeking inspiration, the session did not disappoint. Participants left with a treasure trove of fresh ideas, their minds ignited by the potential of Gen AI to revolutionize student success, streamline processes, and propel education forward. The concise packet provided served as a springboard for further exploration, keeping the conversation going long after the final bell.

Beyond the GenConnect Session: AI in Schools: Bridging Policy Innovation Practices and Measuring for Districts

The conversation around AI in education continued the following day with a panel discussion featuring Kovexa’s founder, Andrew Ko. Moderated by Ash Vesudeva from the Carnegie Foundation, the panel, titled “AI in Schools: Bridging Policy, Innovation Practices, and Measuring Impact for Districts,” explored the key questions surrounding AI adoption in schools:

  • How can AI be used productively to empower teachers and students?
  • What are the ethical considerations surrounding student data and AI use?
  • How can we develop policies that guide responsible AI implementation?
  • How can we ensure equitable access to safe and reliable AI tools for all students?

Panelists, including Noelle Ellerson Ng from AASA, Phil Emer, senior director of innovation at MCNC, and Ed Dieterle, chief learning scientist at Kovexa Solutions, emphasized the importance of using AI as a tool to enhance existing practices, not replace them. They highlighted the need for clear policies and guardrails to ensure responsible use and ethical considerations.

Andrew Ko, representing Kovexa, envisioned a future where AI becomes seamlessly integrated into schools, empowering teachers and administrators to personalize learning, streamline processes, and, ultimately, prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.

The Future of Education: Powered by AI, Driven by Educators
